Livestock Judging Contest at Montana Winter Fair
Venue: Livestock Pavilion, Fergus County Fairgrounds, Lewistown, MT
Livestock Judging Contest, Montana Winter Fair
Dave Phillips, Co-Superintendent, Winter Fair Livestock Judging Contest
As a 4-H or FFA member, do you remember making a trip to Bozeman in January to participate in the Winter Fair Livestock Judging Contest? I’m sure many of you in the central Montana area, and beyond, recall those trips and the overnight stay in the big city of Bozeman. I know I have fond memories of those trips as an adult chaperone!
At the 2020 Winter Fair here in Lewistown, the livestock judging contest is returning! On Saturday, January 25, 4-H and FFA members, competing as a team member or as an individual, will have to opportunity to compete for prize money while sharpening their skills of observation, decision making and public speaking by giving oral reasons. As many former 4-H members have told me, “the two things from 4-H that helped me most in my adult career are livestock judging and learning how to give an illustrated talk or a speech”.
4-H and FFA teams compete for rosette ribbons plus cash awards ranging from $75 to $25 depending on placing 1st through 3rd, respectively. Individual awards are ribbons for the top three in each age division.
Participants will receive scores in at least 8 classes of livestock that may include beef, sheep, swine, goats and oral reasons.
So, 4-H clubs and FFA chapters, get your teams and/or individuals registered! Complete details are available in the schedule and premium book for the 2020 Montana Winter Fair. See you at the 4-H and FFA Livestock Judging Contest on January 25. The event gets underway with registration at 7:30am; the contest begins at 8:00am.
Registration forms and payment information available at MontanaWinterFair.com. Entry fee is $50/team and $15/individual. Forms and fees must be received by January 10, 2020.
